The Story of La Serrería: how an old timber mill became a soulful retreat in Belmonte

A place that captivated us from the first moment

Some projects are born after years of planning. Others appear when you least expect them.

The story of La Serrería began on an ordinary day in Belmonte. Lorenzo, one of the project's main instigators, was passing through the area when he saw the «For Sale» sign on the old plot of land where the village sawmill had operated for years.

What he found upon approaching was far more than just land.

It was a spacious, open area, steeped in history and offering privileged views of Belmonte Castle. A place that conveyed a hard-to-explain feeling: tranquility, silence, and the impression that something truly special could be built there.

That first visit was enough to imagine a different project.

The idea of creating accommodation with a story

From the outset, it was clear to us that this space deserved to be shared.

The location was exceptional: right in the historic centre of Belmonte, just a stone's throw from the castle, collegiate church, mills, and the main town squares. A place where visitors can forget about the car and discover every corner on foot.

But what really convinced us was the atmosphere of the place.

The spaciousness, the open views to the castle, the infinite La Mancha sky, and the tranquility that could be felt there made us think it could become a refuge for those seeking to disconnect from the fast pace of everyday life.

And so the idea for La Serrería was born.

Not just accommodation, but a space to pause, breathe, and reconnect with what truly matters.

Recapture the essence of an old sawmill

Before becoming the complex it is today, this place was a sawmill dedicated to woodworking for decades.

When we started the project, a large part of the facilities were in a very dilapidated state. There were abandoned structures, ruined areas, and a lot of work ahead.

However, from the very beginning we knew we didn't want to erase their history.

Our aim was to bring it back to life whilst preserving everything that made the place unique.

That's why, during the refurbishment, we restored and integrated numerous original elements that are still part of La Serrería today.

Historical elements that remain present

Historical elements that remain present in La Serreria

One of the aspects that excited us the most was maintaining the authentic identity of the space.

Among the preserved items, the following stand out:

  • The original saw from the old factory.
  • The stone arches that connected different spaces within the complex.
  • A section of the historic wall integrated within the property.
  • The original enclosing walls.
  • Reclaimed timber from old warehouses, reused in decorative and structural elements.

Every corner holds a piece of the place's history.

And it is precisely that combination of past and present that makes La Serrería different.

The origin of the name La Serrería

Many people ask us where the name comes from.

The answer is simple.

The Belmonte sawmill was here for years.

When it came to naming the project, we didn't want to invent a name without meaning. We preferred to maintain the link to the place's history and pay homage to an important part of the village's memory.

That's why we decided to keep the name La Serrería.

A way to remember the past while we build a new future for this space.

A family project

Behind La Serrería there is more than just a tourist business.

There is a family.

The project was born from the joint effort of Lorenzo, Silvia, Isabel, and Eusebio, who from the outset were committed to transforming that old industrial space into accommodation with its own unique personality.

Today we continue to manage it with the same philosophy with which it all began: closeness, attention to detail and a human touch that makes every guest feel at home.

Because we believe that hospitality isn't just measured by facilities, but by how you make people feel.

Much more than just a place to sleep

When someone arrives at La Serrería for the first time, they usually say the same thing: that the place is more impressive in person.

The views of Belmonte Castle, the silence, the spaciousness of the complex, and the integration of historical elements create an atmosphere that is difficult to find elsewhere.

Our aim has always been for those who visit us to take away something more than just a stay.

May they remember peace.

May they remember the silence.

May they remember the feeling of having found a place where time seems to stand still.

And so, when they think of Belmonte, let them also remember the story that lives on within the walls of La Serrería.
